Clare Davidson,

I am very pleased to have been able to attend the 2009 NHIVNA conference in Birmingham. I found it exciting and inspiring. The scholarship I gained made the event much more accessible to me and I think it is very useful for newer members of staff to have the opportunity to attend an event like this. I am very grateful to have received the funding.

There were many things which I enjoyed about attending the conference. I found the presentations by staff describing their approaches to HIV care, which were often innovative, very inspiring. The oral abstract presentations were great for the variety in the track and the quality of the presentation. I found listening to these a useful reminder of the different approaches to research and research methodology which I have not encountered much since leaving university.

I also enjoyed meeting nurses working in HIV care from different parts of the UK. Although this was only my first year at the conference I can see that being able to meet and share ideas with other health professionals regularly in this way could be very beneficial.

Mathew Sidebottom,

First of all I would like to thank you for the opportunity to attend conference this year after being awarded the Junior Nurse Scholarship.

I am new to the field of HIV after being a Senior Staff Nurse in Intensive Care for a number of years. Having the opportunity to attend the conference has given me the chance to network with other HIV professionals and to share valuable information and experiences.

The varied program over the two days was both interesting and informative. I have certainly been encouraged to attend the conference next year as it is the most effective way of keeping up to date on advances in the field both nationally and internationally.

Once again, thank you for the opportunity to attend conference this year and I will be looking forward to Brighton next year!

Mathew.

Hazel Ridgers,

Being awarded the NHIVNA/BI Junior Nurse Scholarship gave me a fantastic opportunity to attend my first NHIVNA conference and I got so much from it!

The conference was great, lots of food for thought about providing care across the lifespan; from the plenary sessions and lectures on transitional care of adolescents to the symposium on HIV and Aging, areas that present particular challenges as well as opportunities for innovative HIV nursing practice.

It was also great to see my own Imperial College colleagues shine on stage giving lectures and receiving awards. They were excellent and it made me feel very proud! And of course it was a great opportunity to meet other nurses from a wide range of settings as well as catch up with nurses that I had met on a previous NHIVNA study day at the Gala dinner over quite a few glasses of wine!

Feeding back to my colleagues who stayed at home to hold the fort was exciting too. We all felt really enthusiastic about some nurse led services presented in the posters. They gave us lots of ideas for future development!

Thank you for the experience!

Hazel.

Holly Woolloff,

I was lucky enough to win one of the Junior Nurse Scholarships for this year’s NHIVNA’s conference. I had an enjoyable time, and learnt a lot from the variety of speakers present. As a novice nurse in this field it enabled me to broaden my understanding of the evolution of the virus and the combative medications available. Learning about the new challenges HIV nursing is facing, particularly with the aging population and those with Hepatitis C co-infection was also really eye-opening.

Listening to the talks from the different specialist nurses was very inspiring, and made me even more passionate about getting to the stage of having that much knowledge and understanding around HIV.

I am already looking forward to next year’s conference, and hope to maybe contribute a poster of my own!

Holly.
