Exploring SDM in HIV nursing care

Atwopartsequentialmixedmethodsdesignwasadopted[16].
Part 1: qualitative study
Thequalitativestudycomponentcomprisedfourfocus-groupdiscussionswithHIVnurses.These
tookplacefromFebruarytoApril2015.Thefocusgroupsweredesignedtoelicitnurses'views
andexperiencesaroundSDMandtoidentifyareaswhereSDMmaybecontestedorwhereit
maybeparticularlychal enging[17].Thegroupsweredesignedtoreflectexperiencesofnurses
indifferentpartsofthecountry,andwereundertakeninfourdifferentgeographicalregions(North
West,Midlands,LondonandtheSouthEast).
RecruitmenttothefocusgroupswasthroughregionalsubgroupswithinNHIVNA.Theseare
smal ,regional yfocusedgroupsthatactashubsforlocalcommunication,traininganddevelopment
aroundHIVnursing.TheChairpersonofeachgroupinvitedmembersbyemailtoattendanSDM
projectfocus-groupdiscussion.TheinclusioncriteriawerenurseswhowereBand5orabovewith
HIVpatientcaseloadsorworkingwithinHIVservices.Atotalof15nursestookpart(seeTable1).

Thefocusgroupswerefacilitatedbytheprojectresearchassistantandonememberofthe
projectadvisoryteam.Eachfocusgroupwasaudiorecordedandtranscribedverbatim.
Datawereanalysedusingathematicanalysisapproach.Segmentsofthetranscriptswerecoded
accordingtotheirmeanings[18].Thecodeswerethengroupedandfurtheranalysedintoseveral
corethemesandassociatedsubthemes[19,20].Theprojectteamworkedtogethertodevelopand
refinetheemerginginterpretations[21].
Part 2: online survey
Thethemesfromthequalitativestudywereusedtoinformthedesignofanonlinequestionnaire
thataimedtoidentifyHIVnurses'knowledge,practicesandtrainingneedsinrelationtoSDM
(seeAppendix).Thequestionnairewaspilotedbyfivenursesinonegeographicalregionandthen
finalised.
AnemailwiththelinktotheSDMonlinesurveywassentouttoallNHIVNAmembersviathe
NHIVNASecretariat.TheseweresentinearlyJune2015andfollowedbytworeminderemails.
Thequestionnaireresultswereanalysedusingdescriptivestatistics.
Ethics
2016
EthicalapprovalfortheresearchwasgrantedbytheUniversityofNottingham,FacultyofMedicine
andHealthSciencesResearchEthicsCommittee.Participationinbothpartsofthestudywas
entirelyvoluntary.Participationinthefocusgroupsrequiredwrittenconsent.Responsetotheonline
surveywastakentoimplyconsent.Allparticipantcontributionshavebeenanonymised.
