Annual health review for people living with HIV: a good practice guide Annual health review for people living with HIV: a good practice guide

For people living with HIV (PLHIV), having a high quality annual health review carried out by a healthcare professional is an essential part of managing their HIV infection. An annual health review can support PLHIV to lead healthy and fulfilling lives incorporating holistic needs and providing early detection and prevention of risk factors or comorbid illness. Defining what a high-quality annual health review is, and what standards healthcare professionals should aspire to and attain, has not been described. This is the first good practice guide to describe a minimum set of standards for an annual health review.

Halve it campaign: 'Early testing saves lives' a position paper

If diagnosed early, HIV can be successfully treated and people with HIV live to near-normal life expectancies. Late diagnosis, by contrast, is associated with a greater risk of hospitalisation and AIDS-related illness, reduced life expectancy and increased cost to the NHS. It is also associated with increased onwards transmission, and continued sexual risk taking while people are unaware of their HIV-positive status.

Halve It is a new coalition of national experts determined to tackle the continued public health challenges posed by HIV. This campaign is being supported by NHIVNA.

Standards for psychological support for adults living with HIV

British Psychological Society (BPS), British HIV Association (BHIVA) and Medical Foundation for AIDS & Sexual Health (MedFASH)

Published: 17 November 2011

Despite significant medical advances in HIV treatment, people living with HIV experience significantly higher rates of psychological difficulties than the general population. Psychological support improves both mental and physical health and reduces the risk of HIV transmission. Yet the availability and quality of psychological support for people living with HIV is currently variable.  These standards describe the support that all adults living with HIV should receive, from a wide range of professional groups, peers and informal providers, to enhance their mental health and their cognitive, emotional and behavioural wellbeing.

Jointly produced by the BPS, BHIVA and MedFASH with the active engagement of a multidisciplinary working party, these first ever UK Standards for psychological support for adults living with HIV are endorsed by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), the National AIDS Trust (NAT), the National HIV Nurses Association (NHIVNA), the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ (RCPsych) Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry, and the Society of Sexual Health Advisers (SSHA).
